Why is Markdown?

In a world of competing standards and conflicting ideas, the prevalence of Markdown cannot be ignored. Markdown has permeated every facet of web publishing, from reddit comments to blog publications. But why though? Why is Markdown so universal?

There are three reasons that Markdown has survived in a land of constant turnover. The first has to do with the nature of raw text editing. The second has to do with the purpose of information published on the web. The last has to do with the simplicity and brilliance of markdowns design.
