Metric-Compatible Fonts

Two fonts are Metric-Compatible with each other if swapping between them will not result in letters being repositioned on the page. This is achieved by having the exact same glyph (letter) dimensions and hinting—the adjusted spacing between two letters, like M and W, to reduce space between their features. Metric-compatible fonts can be used in web pages so that a downloaded font file does not update the layout of the document when the web safe font is replaced.
